What’s Your Job at Church?

What’s Your Job at Church?

This week, Pastor John hands over the TAGD keyboard to Marti Wiegman, Northpoint’s Director of Women’s Ministries.

Dear Church Family,

Earlier this week, one of our Women of the Word leaders relayed the story of sharing with a new acquaintance that she attends Northpoint. The woman asked her matter-of-factly, “What’s your job at church?” She just assumed that someone who attends a church would have a role to play.

Throughout the New Testament, this message comes across loud and clear—like in I Corinthians 12 where Paul talks about us each being an essential part of the Body. In WOW we have been studying the book of I John, where we find this concept proclaimed in a slightly different way: Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth (I John 3:18).

Do you feel the love here at Northpoint? Sometimes it’s all around us and we fail to see it. For example: have you ever enjoyed a cup of coffee on a Sunday morning? That is a gift of love provided by a small team of faithful men and women—from college students to retirees—who come early to set up the beverage station, work to keep supplies full between services while we enjoy visiting with friends, and stay late to clean up as the rest of us dart off to various restaurants or home for the latest sporting event. Now that’s speaking my love language!

Have you ever wondered: who stuffs the resource folders, who fills the communion cups, who puts soap in all those bathroom dispensers, who comes early to turn on the air conditioning, who walks the crying babies, who makes sure the trash gets emptied, who makes repairs on the “honey do” list that never ends, who meets weekly in small devoted circles to be our prayer warriors? The list goes on and on.  And the answer is, brothers and sisters in Christ who are faithfully loving in word and deed.

So let me ask you: what’s your job at the church? There are many ways we could love one another even better here at Northpoint if we each played the part God has designed us to fill in His Body. Like the Apostle John writes: let’s not just discuss what needs to be done, but let’s apply the work and effort to make love a tangible reality.

Serving Him together,

Marti
