SOTD John 19:17-42
Passage: John 19:17-42
Instructions: Before you come to God’s Word, ask God to give you Wisdom (James 1:5) as you read the Bible. Ask God to help you to understand it and to have it impact your life!
Read the passage above through once and then go-back and re-read the text SLOWLY. While you are re-reading, ask yourself the following questions.
Where did they take Jesus and what did they do to Him? (17-18)
What is significant about what Pilate had written on the sign that was above Jesus’ cross?
What did the Jews want written instead? Why?
What did the soldiers do to Jesus’ clothes? Why is this important? (23-24)
Who did Jesus see standing near the cross?
Who do you think “the disciple whom Jesus loved” is?
What did Jesus tell that disciple to do? (27)
What does Jesus do next? (28-29)
Why does He do this?
What does Jesus say as He dies? (30)
Why is this important? What does this mean for you?
Why does John write that Jesus “gave up” His spirit? (30)
What did the Jews want to do to those being crucified? (31-32)
What did the soldiers do to Jesus? (33-37)
Why are these events important and recorded for us?
What happens to Jesus after this? (38-42)
What do you think the disciples were feeling as Jesus died?
After Jesus rose from the dead and the disciples understood that the events of the crucifixion (including the soldiers casting lots for Jesus’ clothes and not breaking His legs) had been prophesied beforehand in the Bible and happened exactly as predicted, how do you think the disciples felt then?
How should we respond to reading of these events occurring just as they had been predicted? How should that make us feel?
What does Jesus saying “it is finished” mean for you in your life? Why should you be excited about that statement?
When Jesus says “it is finished”- He is saying that He has finished the work that He came to do? What did Jesus come to do?
If Jesus has already paid the price for sins, do you need pay some of the price on your own?
How might we try to pay the price for our own sins in our lives?
What is the only way our sins can be paid for?
Let’s rejoice today that the work that Jesus came to do is FINISHED! If we put our trust in Him, Jesus COMPLETELY takes the penalty for all of our sins! What great and encouraging news!
Spend some time meditating on the finished work of Jesus and praying to God about that and thanking Him for it today!

Why did the Jews want Jesus crucified? (7)

How did the Jews respond- who was their king? (15)
What should have been the Jew’s reaction to Jesus as the Son of God?
How did they respond to Him instead?
Who did they say was their king?
Why did they want Cesar to be their king rather than Jesus to be their king?
What would have had to change in their life if they were to make Jesus their king?
Why don’t many people today want Jesus to be the king and ruler of their life?
Is Jesus your king? Are you willing to submit to his rule in your life?
