Here is the latest update on Naíme Phillips' surgery from last week.

Good evening, dear ones.

For the last four days, Naíme has been in the ICU after the intervention she had on Friday. She spent a couple of days wearing a mask through which she breathed heliox (helium and oxygen). Her breathing has improved and her stridor is much less than before. Her voice is hoarse. She has been able to continue eating foods that are easy to chew (which makes her very happy) although she continues to be given fluids by tube.

This morning we have been moved to the main floor, so she resumes her respiratory, speech and physical therapies. The administration of corticosteroids and other medications is also reduced. Her eyesight improves (when she cannot focus well, she closes her left eye and makes a double effort with her right). She is beginning to read on her computer in very large print. She has written me love letters from daughter to mother, in large print which are almost always legible. She doesn't always see the page boundary but we have been told that all of these details are corrected with therapy and consistency. In the area of math she has also surprised us (at a level of third grade, more or less).

Thanks to her smile and her desire to fight, Naíme has been loved by the doctors, therapists and nurses of the ICU and the ward. Many of them have made moving comments to us and we feel extremely loved and cared for by the entire healthcare team ~ and by all of you, for your wishes to be able to help even more. Your prayers sustain us. We are learning to live today (“with its own eagerness”) and not to focus on permanent and irreversible damages, but on the achievements and advances that we have seen since Naíme opened her eyes and clenched her fists when she came out of the coma.

How much compassion of God! Love ️

Naíme (Mom)
