Proverbs 28
1(A) The wicked flee when no one pursues,
but(B) the righteous are bold as a lion.
2When a land transgresses,(C) it has many rulers,
but with a man of understanding and knowledge,
its stability will long continue.
3(D) A poor man who oppresses the poor
is a beating rain that leaves no food.
4Those who forsake the law(E) praise the wicked,
but those who keep the law(F) strive against them.
5Evil men(G) do not understand justice,
but those who seek the LORD(H) understand it completely.
6(I) Better is a poor man who(J) walks in his integrity
than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.
7The one who keeps the law is a son with understanding,
but(K) a companion of gluttons shames his father.
8Whoever multiplies his wealth(L) by interest and profit[a]
(M) gathers it for him who is(N) generous to the poor.
9If one turns away his ear from hearing the law,
even his(O) prayer is an abomination.
10Whoever misleads the upright into an evil way
(P) will fall into his own pit,
but the blameless(Q) will have a goodly inheritance.
11A rich man is wise in his(R) own eyes,
but a poor man who has understanding(S) will find him out.
12When(T) the righteous triumph, there is great glory,
but when(U) the wicked rise, people hide themselves.
13Whoever(V) conceals his transgressions will not prosper,
but he who(W) confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.
14Blessed is the one who(X) fears the LORD always,
but whoever(Y) hardens his heart will fall into calamity.
15Like(Z) a roaring lion or(AA) a charging bear
is(AB) a wicked ruler over a poor people.
16A ruler who(AC) lacks understanding is a cruel oppressor,
but he who hates unjust gain will prolong his days.
17If one is burdened with(AD) the blood of another,
he will be a fugitive until death;[b]
let no one help him.
18(AE) Whoever(AF) walks in integrity will be delivered,
but he who is crooked in his ways will suddenly fall.
19(AG) Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread,
but he who follows worthless pursuits will have plenty of poverty.
20A faithful man will abound with blessings,
but whoever hastens to be rich(AH) will not go unpunished.
21To show(AI) partiality is not good,
but for(AJ) a piece of bread a man will do wrong.
22A(AK) stingy man[c](AL) hastens after wealth
and does not know that(AM) poverty will come upon him.
23Whoever(AN) rebukes a man will afterward find more favor
than(AO) he who flatters with his tongue.
24Whoever robs his father or his mother
and says, “That is no transgression,”
is(AP) a companion to a man who destroys.
25A greedy man(AQ) stirs up strife,
but the one who trusts in the LORD will(AR) be enriched.
26Whoever(AS) trusts in his own mind is a fool,
but he who walks in wisdom will be delivered.
27Whoever(AT) gives to the poor will not want,
but he who(AU) hides his eyes will get many a curse.
28When(AV) the wicked rise,(AW) people hide themselves,
but when they perish, the righteous increase.
Proverbs 29
1(AX) He who is often reproved, yet stiffens his neck,
will suddenly be(AY) broken(AZ) beyond healing.
2When(BA) the righteous increase, the people rejoice,
but when(BB) the wicked rule, the people groan.
3He who(BC) loves wisdom makes his father glad,
but(BD) a companion of prostitutes(BE) squanders his wealth.
4By justice a king(BF) builds up the land,
but he who exacts gifts[d] tears it down.
5(BG) A man who flatters his neighbor
spreads(BH) a net for his feet.
6An evil man is(BI) ensnared in his transgression,
but a righteous man(BJ) sings and rejoices.
7A righteous man(BK) knows the rights of the poor;
a wicked man does not(BL) understand such knowledge.
8(BM) Scoffers set a city aflame,
but the wise turn away wrath.
9If a wise man has an argument with a fool,
the fool only rages and laughs, and there is(BN) no quiet.
10Bloodthirsty men(BO) hate one who is blameless
and seek the life of the upright.[e]
11A fool gives full vent to his spirit,
but a wise man quietly holds it back.
12If a ruler listens to falsehood,
all his officials will be wicked.
13The poor man and the oppressor(BP) meet together;
the LORD(BQ) gives light to the eyes of both.
14If a king(BR) faithfully judges the poor,
his throne will(BS) be established forever.
15(BT) The rod and reproof give wisdom,
but a child left to himself(BU) brings shame to his mother.
16When the wicked increase, transgression increases,
but(BV) the righteous will look upon their downfall.
17(BW) Discipline your son, and he will give you rest;
he will give delight to your heart.
18Where(BX) there is no prophetic vision the people(BY) cast off restraint,[f]
but blessed is he who(BZ) keeps the law.
19By mere words a servant is not disciplined,
for though he understands, he will not respond.
20Do you see a man who is hasty in his words?
(CA) There is more hope for a fool than for him.
21Whoever pampers his servant from childhood
will in the end find him his heir.[g]
22(CB) A man of wrath stirs up strife,
and one given to anger causes much transgression.
23(CC) One’s pride will bring him low,
(CD) but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor.
24The partner of a thief(CE) hates his own life;
(CF) he hears the curse, but discloses nothing.
25(CG) The fear of man lays a snare,
but whoever trusts in the LORD is safe.
26Many(CH) seek the face of a ruler,
but it is from the LORD that a man(CI) gets justice.
27(CJ) An unjust man is an abomination to the righteous,
but one whose way is straight is an abomination to the wicked.
