Praying Boldly & Shamelessly
Luke 11:1-13

Overview: The Irish missionary Patrick of the 5th Century is often remembered for legends such as driving out snakes, illustrating the Trinity with a 3-leaf clover, and parades in Boston. However, many of these stories aren’t accurate. Instead, he should be celebrated for his role as a prayer warrior. Kidnapped at 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave, the Lord transformed him through prayer. In one of his writings, he states, “But after I came to Ireland, every day I had to tend sheep, many times a day I prayed—the love of God and his fear came to me more and more, and my faith was strengthened. And my spirit was moved so that in a single day I would say as many as a hundred prayers, and almost as many in the night, and this even when I was staying in the woods and on the mountain; and I used to get up for prayer before daylight, through snow, through frost, through rain, and I felt no harm, and there was no sloth in me—as I now see, because the Spirit within me was then fervent.”

1. Do you have a clear picture of what you should be praying for? How can the Lord’s Prayer (see verses 1-4) shape the way you pray for things? Here is a chart that looks at the categories along with some suggestions:

• Worship – Glory, Holiness, Love, Mercy, Kindness, Justice, Patience
• Needs – Finances, Home, Food, Family, Clothing, Work, Health
• Relationships – Confession of sin to God, a heart of forgiveness towards others, confession of sin towards others
• Sanctification – Humility, Love, Purity, Contentment, Gentleness, Patience, Joy, Wisdom, Faithfulness, Fruitfulness

2. How can you pray boldly and shamelessly for God’s worship, your daily needs, your relationships, and your sanctification right now? (see especially vv. 8-9)

3. Why can you be confident that God will always listen and answer your prayers? (see vv. 10-13)
