A True Independence Day

Rewind to 365 days ago.  A group of us got together at Santana Park for the 4th of July festivities and celebrated the freedom that our nation enjoys based on the independence we declared back in 1776.  We watched fireworks, ate watermelon, and I’m pretty sure the words “We will not go quietly into the night” from Independence Day were quoted.  It was a great day.

However, we weren’t the only ones there at the park that day.  As I think back, I think that the only thought that went through my mind about the other people at the park was that we should always keep someone at our area to make sure someone else at the park didn’t steal something.

I don’t think the fact that thousands and thousands of people at the park that day were truly not free, even though they live in America.  They are slaves.  They are slaves to their own sin and are headed to destruction apart from Christ.

By Billy Blakey

Words from Matthew 9:37-38 come to mind as I think about our involvement in the festivities this year.  For the past year, I have been trying to think of ways that we could get the Revolve community to be in places where non-believers are with the intention of having gospel conversations.  I think tonight, we’ve found an opportunity.

Tonight, we are not going to paint the word “Jesus” on our chests, hold signs about the coming destruction, or yell at people.  We are simply going to live as a community in front of non-believers and try to be intentional to pursue people with the message of the Gospel that can truly bring freedom.  My prayer is that for some at Santana Park today will truly be their Independence Day.

We’ll meet to pray together at the VanNewKirk’s House at 6:30, and we’ll walk over to the park at 7!  Details on the Revolve Page on Facebook.

COMMIT- Billy Blakey

In light of our series that we’ve been studying for the past few weeks on being those who have been grasped by the Gospel and are truly committed to Christ, I wanted to share this quote from Jonathan Edwards. “On one Saturday night, in particular, I had such a discovery of the excellency of the… Continue Reading

California Idols: Stuff

Although we laugh at cultures that bow down to wooden statues and stone carvings…calling them backward and archaic, we bow down to metal boxes on wheels and big wooden boxes on land.  We have made idolatry sophisticated…we’ve made it look good!  Yet, it’s still the same old idolatry. Stuff… Sinking $100,000 into a car that… Continue Reading

California Idols: Kids’ Success

This is something I wrote last November for a personal blog… As I sat at Starbucks this morning, trying out the new Thanksgiving brew from the new Christmas cups, I couldn’t help but overhear a conversation between two couples about their sons and baseball.  Essentially, they were conversing about their sons’ involvement with travel baseball… Continue Reading

California Idols: The Body

Take a trip to the beach, the gym, or even to the supermarket and it doesn’t take long to see that our culture has made an idol out of “the body.”  People spend hours trying to make their body look chiseled, tanned, blemishless, the right shape, and fit.  From the rave of 100-Calorie snack packs… Continue Reading
